Finding Their Game

How a New Partnership Between the YMCA and Grand Strand Miracle Leagues Is Helping Athletes Discover What They Can Do

Kyle Parsons has already mastered one part of flag football.

“It’s not very hard to steal the flags,” he said. “I’m a master at it though.”

Across the field, six-year-old Ezra Spinelli proudly explained why pulling flags is his favorite drill.

“Because I usually get the most flags.”

Asked how far he can throw a football, Ezra grinned.

“Super far.”

Then he stretched his arms as wide as they would go.

Nearby, Cam Markos broke down the mechanics of a touchdown play with the confidence of a seasoned coach.

“If you say ‘hut,’ you’ll grab the ball, find the person in the outfield, then I throw, the guy catches, now he will make a touchdown.”

For athletes participating in Grand Strand Miracle Leagues’ new flag football program at the YMCA of Coastal Carolina, the excitement isn’t simply about having somewhere to play.

It’s about discovering a sport they can call their own.

This spring, Grand Strand Miracle Leagues and the YMCA of Coastal Carolina launched an adaptive flag football program at the Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA, expanding a partnership that previously included swim programming and creating a new opportunity for athletes to learn, compete, and grow together.

“When we were approached by the Miracle League about this potential partnership, for me it was a no-brainer,” said YMCA Sports Director Jason Mueller. “Anytime you get a chance to work with an organization like them and what they do for our community, it aligns a lot with what we want to do here.”

Each week, players rotate through stations focused on throwing, catching, route running, teamwork, communication, and flag pulling. The format is designed to meet athletes where they are while helping them build confidence and develop new skills.

For Grand Strand Miracle Leagues Executive Director Stephanie Warren, the value of the program extends beyond football itself.

“Our players love all sorts of different sports,” Warren said. “To be able to have additional opportunities just gives people a chance to find their sport and try something new out.”

And for some athletes, flag football quickly became exactly that.

“Some of our players, this has been their sport,” Warren said. “They’ve really excelled at it, they love it, they’ve found their rhythm with it.”

That’s easy to see on the field.

Players celebrate catches. Teammates cheer each other on. Buddies run alongside athletes through drills. Coaches offer encouragement while players learn the fundamentals of a game many have watched for years but never had the opportunity to play themselves.

For Kyle, the lessons extend beyond football.

“What really helps is to have the motivation to do it,” he said.

Like many athletes, he’s learning that trying something new isn’t always easy.

“Flag football is a new experience for me,” Kyle said. “It can be hard to adapt, but that’s just part of it.”

It’s a mindset that reflects what both organizations hope participants take away from the experience.

Not every player will become a football star.

Not every athlete will find that football is their favorite sport.

But every Thursday evening, players are learning new skills, building confidence, and discovering what they’re capable of.

Sometimes all it takes is the opportunity to try.

“Football is a very popular sport,” Warren said. “They may watch it at home with family members, and so to get to come out and play it—however that is they participate—is really cool to see.”

For the YMCA of Coastal Carolina and Grand Strand Miracle Leagues, that’s what makes this partnership meaningful.

Not simply creating another sports program.

But creating opportunities for athletes to discover new passions, challenge themselves, and find their game.
